Maldon, Thursday 26th July 2012: Still on a high from previous historic racing calendar wins, leading classic car specialist JD Classics finished the Silverstone Classic with multiple race victories.
Now in its 22nd year, Silverstone Classic is billed the ‘World’s Biggest Classic Motor Racing Festival’ and the crowds flocked to the circuit over the course of three days (July 20-22) to witness over 800 nostalgic race cars compete over 20 races on the Tarmac that hosted the British Grand Prix just two weeks previously.
JD Classics entered four cars; a semi-lightweight spec E-Type (1196 WK) into the E-Type Challenge (Alex Buncombe) and a Cooper Jaguar T33 (Andrew Smith/John Young) into the RAC Woodcote Trophy. Furthermore, the two cars entered into the Stirling Moss Trophy certainly kept Chris Ward busy; a Costin Lister (Alex Buncombe/Chris Ward) and a Jaguar D-Type (Andrew Smith/Chris Ward).
For the E-Type Challenge, Alex Buncombe, who’s had a string of triumphs this season, drove the semi-lightweight spec E-Type (1196 WK). Buncombe was no stranger to the car, having previously won both rounds of the E-Type Challenge at the Donington Historic Festival. Out of the 36 entrants, he qualified pole and went on to win the first race and set the fastest lap (2:22.733). For the second race, Buncombe extended his lead even further, crossing the line some 16 seconds ahead of second place.
The RAC Woodcote Trophy sprung the biggest surprise for the JD Classics race team headed up by Steve Riedling. Despite a wet qualifying session, Andrew Smith and John Young managed to put the Cooper Jaguar T33 Jaguar fifth on the grid (3:11.515) out of 46 cars. The pair managed to finish second in race one and progressed to victory in race two.
The Stirling Moss Trophy race was equally fruitful when Buncombe drove the Costin Lister with Chris Ward. Battling against a 40 strong field, the car qualified on pole and crossed the line in first place, 12 seconds in front of the second placed car. The D-Type driven by Andrew Smith and Chris Ward struggled to set a good time in qualifying due to circuit traffic but it remained consistent and came home in 26th position.
